Make Learning English Fun For A Non-English Speaker

There are lots of things to do in making learning English fun for a non-English speaker. Teachers often find new ways to help their classes be more interesting, and sometimes they do what their students want to do. Moreover, there are some things aside from traditional books that you can remember to be able to learn English in a more interesting and fun way.

Perhaps one of the things that can help a non-English speaker is to not mind about the grammar too much. Building on your vocabulary should probably be the first, whilst grammar comes in second. The reason behind this is that you are able to communicate with words, even if you have poor grammar. On the other hand, a poor knowledge in words but seamless grammar is pretty hard to understand.

Understanding that English words are the most important can make learners value the language more, and help them to speak. Thinking and speaking in English are also two good ways to enable them not to mind grammar too much. Many learners fail to learn the language because they refuse to speak, thinking that they may commit mistakes. Not minding about your mistakes, and simply speaking is definitely a good way.

All English learners probably love music, so it isn’t quite a surprise that a number of learners utilize music to in making learning English fun for a non-English speaker. Teachers also use music since it somewhat promotes a lighter mood in the classroom. English lyrics can be great sources of speaking and listening activities, as well as comprehension activities to help learners grasp the language.

English music lyrics can provide these learners new words and a way to remember them. Remembering a language through music usually works better for most students because they connect words with melodies, making them easy to recall. Kids and teenagers may like to sing along, as well, and do simple exercises such as filling in the missing lyrics in their activity sheets.

Some learners tend to retain language better when paired with visuals and audio. Different educational videos, and even your normal sitcoms in English can be a great way. Some learners also watch movies or shows in their native language, but set the subtitles in English. It makes them translate what they hear and see the words, enabling the to recall to spell the words easier than simply remembering through hearing.

And of course, who can forget about various games? A simple charades game can make students recall their vocabularies even better. There are also various games which can target both vocabulary and grammar. Make some song titles, then cut them each into words. Give them to groups of three, and ask them to make their own song titles with sense. They would definitely recall the words and their meanings better. Keep a dictionary in hand, just in case.

Learning English doesn’t have to be strapped to the books and lesson plans. With a mixture of conversations, games, film and music, making learning English fun for a non-English speaker is as easy as 1-2-3.

Cheating Persists with the GMAT

So looks such as the GMAC establishment that runs the GMAT exam is cracking down on cheating in China. In other words, some students are violating the rules of the GMAT and finding ways to see test questions before their actual exam. This is happening on the internet.

In 2009 alone, 32 scores were revoked by GMAC and 24 test takers were blocked from retaking the GMAT for 5 years.

GMAC says that in 2009 alone, 32 scores were revoked by GMAC. Another 24 Chinese test takers were blocked from retaking the GMAT for 5 years.

There was a internet site (www.passion.org.cn) that was giving away live GMAT test doubts (ones actually being used for the exam) for a fee. So now there’s going to be increased security steps including the use of palm vein readers, digital photos, and passport scanners.

GMAC also has sophisticated web crawling software to find which web sites are distributing GMAT questions.

The fact of the matter is cheating will always exist in one form or another. With GRE encroaching on GMAT territory, GMAT guys need to be on their best behavior to prove to business schools that their exam is better than the GRE. Otherwise, the GMAT exam will be losing market share.

I wonder what happens in the future. Will they have sophisticated CIA level security measures that they use in the TV show 24? Who knows. Security will always be a concern. And with the pace of technology progress these days, more and more security measures will be present–everything from hidden cameras to live security analysis. The future will tell. The incentive to cheat because of the competitive nature in MBA admissions and GMAT test preparation will always be there. It is just a matter of controlling it so it doesn’t get out of hand.

Perhaps even another reason why GMAC is increasing security measures for their GMAT measure is to maintain the integrity of their exam value in the eyes of business schools as the GRE exam encroaches onto their territory. Many top business schools are now accepting either the GMAT or the GRE exam for a variety of reasons ranging form attracting a more diverse student body to just expanding their overall applicant pool. Whatever the case may be, you can expect security measures to go up in the future.

267,000 People Take GMAT in 2009

Yup, that’s how lots of people you are competing with when you take the GMAT exam. At least that’s the figure that the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) announced for 2009. 267,000 is merely a few thousand more than 2008’s number of 264,700. So roughly the same as last year.

Interesting to see what will happen next year as ETS tries to market by themselves and promote their GRE exam as an alternative to the GMAT.

Additional takeaways:

1) A lot of the testing boom has been driven by students beyond the U.S. It was the initially in the exam’s history that there were actually more international test takers than U.S. test takers. In terms of numbers, about 51% of test takers were non-U.S. citizens.

2) There’s a trend of higher quality business schools around the world outside the US. Itused to be that all the international students were sending their test scores to U.S. business schools. About 75% of them did this. But now, that number is down slightly bit to 65%-indicating that more of them are sending scores to business schools around the world. There is less of a U.S.-centric mentality when it comes to putting on to business school from a global perspective.

3) Also, there are relatively more women taking the exam now-about 105,000 out of the 265,000 or so taking the exam.

Well, that’s just a few trends I wanted to illustrate in case you were interested.

How will these numbers look better? Well, a lot of that depends on how the economy will do. If the latest boosts in wall street bonus is any indication of the economic recovery in the next few years, then perhaps more people will flock over to jobs instead of school. However, if the economy contains to remain weak on a global scale, then we can expect GMAT enrollments to stay high and possibly elevate slightly.
